History

Automated Graphic Systems, Inc.(AGS) was founded in 1975 by Mr. Frank B. French as an employee-owned, computer-typesetting firm serving the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Located in Charles County, AGS opened its doors with six employees in a rented warehouse space on Industrial Circle in Waldorf, Maryland. In 1977, the company moved to a 10,000-square foot facility on Graphics Drive in White Plains, Maryland and expanded operations to include book and directory printing. That facility has been expanded to 100,000 square feet housing full-service printing, binding and mailing capabilities. Today AGS employs over 300 professionals and craftspeople in three operating facilities.

In 1992, AGS opened Automated Graphic Imaging,(AGI) a service bureau and copy center in Washington D.C., and the One-Off CD Shop in White Plains, Maryland, for the production of CD-ROMs. This was done to support an increased customer demand for easier access to AGS, and new multimedia and communications services.

AGS entered the commercial printing market in 1993 through its purchase of the operating assets of Tecnicom Printing and Publishing, now AGS Custom Graphics, Inc., located in Macedonia, Ohio. The purchase allowed AGS to continue its move towards becoming a complete service provider.

In February 1999, AGS became one of 66 companies to join the Consolidated Graphics, Inc. (CGX) network of printers. CGX is one of the fastest-growing printing companies in the United States and is considered the largest sheet-fed and half-web printer in the country. They have annualized revenues in excess of $700 million. CGX generally operates as an independent holding company.

AGS offers an array of printing and graphic communications services to customers throughout the New England, Mid Atlantic, Southeast, and Great Lakes regions. AGS provides creative design, typesetting, desktop publishing, database management, CD-ROM production, Website development, technical support, conventional and electronic pre-press, printing (digital, sheetfed and web), binding, mailing, storage, and fulfillment.

Since 1990, AGS has appeared in Printing Impressions Top 500 (leading printing companies in North America), improving their position every year. AGS has also appeared in American Printer for three of the past seven years as one of the 50 Fastest Growing Printers in the Country. In 2001, American Printer ranked Consolidated Graphics No. 11 of the 50 Fastest Growing Printers.

From 2000 to 2003, AGS received the prestigious "Best Workplace in America" award, sponsored by Printing Industries of America. AGS continues to emphasize quality, service, safety, and education for both its employees and customers. In the summer of 2001, AGS received a Leading Edge Award from Charles County Technology Network (CCTechNet), honoring them as Technology Company of the Year for Charles County, Maryland.

By consistently looking towards the future, AGS continues to develop new and current markets to serve, to produce books, directories, manuals, catalogs, magazines, brochures, newsletters and marketing collateral. Automated Graphic Systems, Inc. will continue to place additional emphasis on exceeding client expectations in order to keep their support and confidence.
